Courses are taught asynchronously via Blackboard, a dynamic platform that will enhance your learning experience. The program's flexible plan of study allows you to pace your coursework while pursuing a career. Fall and spring courses are taught in eight-week modules within traditional university semesters. You also have the option to take 4-week courses over winter and summer sessions allowing you to complete the program faster. Additionally, most courses offer the opportunity to opt-in to flexible Zoom class sessions to connect with the professor, engage with the content, and build community with colleagues.

Our graduates are prepared to advance their careers in various professional areas. Completion of our degree meets qualifications for current educators to teach high school concurrent enrollment program (CEP) history classes. UNI History MA alumni have also secured positions such as academic administrators, public service, non-profit and NGO academic coordinators and advisors, museum and historical society directors and associates, curators, youth coordinators and associates and archivists.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted, students must submit:
  • A statement of interest being sure to include motivations for seeking a graduate degree, and discussion of why you are pursuing graduate coursework in History. 
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (GPAs of 2.75+ may be considered for provisional admission).
  • Official transcripts sent directly to the Office of Admissions.

Scholarships

History MA Scholarships
The Ray Johnston Graduate Student in American History Scholarship, the Tim Hilby History Scholarship, and the Loren N. Horton Scholarship are available to students seeking an MA degree in History. Apply for any of these via the UNI Scholarship Application.

Online & Distance Education (ODE) Scholarship
UNI Online & Distance Education offers scholarships to degree-seeking graduate students. Qualified applicants will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship ($500 each fall and spring term). Submit your ODE scholarship application online.
